The space now occupied by Smith Partnership looked very different when wefirst visited. It was dirty and stripped back, in the words of Claire Twells ofSmiths "it felt like an underground car park". The client hated it

But what the space had were two vital ingredients for any successful space -big spaces, and lots of natural light; our design team couldn't wait to get started on it. Working closely with the landlord, the Three Hundred & Sixty Degrees designers started shaping the look & feel to test Smith Partnerships appetite for a 'non-office' interior, and what a surprise we got when they returned saying they liked all of it!

From that moment the focus was on creating a workplace which supported their staff, propelled their company forward and put Smith Partnership head and shoulders above the rest in this area.

The client had a number of specific requirements to ensure that environment supported their business; plenty of meeting rooms, plus spaces for focus work or informal meetings, two separate waiting areas, a clear security cordon - and a tunnel!

This tunnel is part of their marketing message; as they are helping clients on a journey, towards the light at the end of the tunnel. It also routes visitors through the open plan space to the conference suite. Having perfected the layout and selected all finishes, the design team handed over to the project team for the construction phase. The building presented a number of challenges, not least because it was stripped back to the raw so everything needed building up from scratch. So the scope of works included all new washrooms, kitchen spaces. An all new lighting scheme was designed and installed, and a complete new power grid was installed in armoured trunking in the basement and brought up through the concrete floor.

The acoustic treatment was an important consideration as the overall design and the rooflights precluded the installation of a ceiling grid with acoustic tiles, so there was a need to design in hanging acoustic baffles.

The overall colour scheme reflects the corporate branding, with the strong red prevalent The inclusion of the hex design weaves through the floor finishes and graphics. The social space and kitchen has quite a different feel. he overall design of this space was put to the vote with the staff and the final installation is just right - a balance of relaxed and sophisticated.

Considerable thought and time was invested in the wall graphics. From the abstract hex design in the social space, to the Derby skyline at the back of the space or the corporate images and messages in the front of the space and the tunnel - the graphics combine to add a depth and sophistication to the whole environment.
